I'm always looking for a new approach for getting on the right side of my brain; for getting the creative juices flowing.
Meditation seemed like something that might get me there. But, the actual practice of it was much more difficult than I expected. My mind being much too busy with the shoulda, coulda, woulda's of my life.
After reading one day about how monks will light a match and watch it burn before starting their meditation, I thought I'd give it a try. It really did help, at least for a minute. Blind contour and modified blind contour drawing also works great for me. So, I joined the two; watching the match burn and then drawing it.
Soon, my goal was to draw the match as perfectly as possible. I began placing the match over the drawing to see if it would cover the drawing exactly and to see how closely I'd recreated the match. While drawing objects perfectly is not really important to me, unless I'm doing an illustration, I was trying to hone my drawing skills and in the process take some time to quiet my mind from my daily 'to do' list.
So, this is my morning process for now, 'The Match Meditation'. I'll keep up with my little ritual for now, while it's still working. But, am anxious to try something new, as well.
If you've got any ideas for focusing your mind, meditations practices, or getting your creative juices flowing, I'd love to hear about them.
